King's Holiday Show is going on at 5 Points Gallery

Yuko Taylor

King’s art is a product of his neurodiversity, blending the unique gifts of autism and synesthesia. One way this combination of sensory experiences takes form is in the scattered numbers that fill his paintings. King’s work conjures playful havens, where his otherwise unspoken voice finds expression. It is a world of renewal, where the act of creating transcends words. Triangle Home Magazine 11-12/2023

Out 2023 | Group exhibition

C.O.A. launches its annual program with the third edition of Out, a critical exhibition about singularity and inclusion. The works of four artists, two of whom are neurodivergent, are brought together. This approach, from an aesthetic, but also societal point of view, is more important than ever in a world where neurodivergence is still perceived as a stigmatizing otherness. Beyond the artistic gesture, Out 2023 proposes a series of human encounters and a privileged opportunity to open up to the beauty of an atypical creation.

Thus, the plastic experience of the exhibition takes place through a main triggering element: colour. Behind the repetitive tracing of a number or the chromatic assembly of a textile work, colours and supports create a new freedom. Whether it’s Edon’s drawing practice, King’s animal paintings, Andrea’s sewn works or Danielle’s landscapes, it's all about sensory exploration.

King's story written by his brother, Rawvision magazine

Yuko Taylor

For synesthete King Nobuyoshi Godwin, colours, numbers and emotions are the key to his uplifting art, as his brother explains

My brother King’s journey as an artist did not begin with a brush or canvas. Now in his late twenties, he is a man of few spoken words, but expresses a deep sense of mindfulness through his artistic style. Sometimes he stares at trees and smiles as if he knows something that we don't. Sounds, such as the squealing of car brakes, and sights like the swaying of trees in the wind, can move him deeply. Paying rapt attention to things that the rest of us tend to tolerate, ignore or not notice occupies a great deal of his daily life.

King is going to NYC for an exhibit! OutSiderArt Fair is excited about King's sweet work in March 2022.

Here is the note from the “outsiderartfair” Instagram post. We are excited if King can go there to walk around the show. Omicron variant has already moved the exhibit a month behind. King’s happy face is featured in Rawvision Magazine as well!

🙂 Take a moment for some ‘sweet love’ and learn about the fascinating practice of King Nobuyoshi Godwin (b. 1991) from Raleigh, North Carolina:

“Godwin began painting at the age of 22. His paintings often depict elements of the natural world—underwater creatures, birds, trees—juxtaposed with the synthetic vibrance of neon colors. Godwin has autism and a form of synesthesia, a condition in which the perception of one sensory experience triggers another. For Godwin and others like him, numerical synesthesia means that numbers are connected to feelings and experiential stories.

Godwin creates his work in three stages, first laying down a bright base coat, and then painting the subject, usually an animal or plant. When he paints, Godwin uses a complex system of colors and numbers (purple and yellow are the happiest colors, while red is the least, for example) to express how he is feeling. Finally, Godwin uses Japanese paint markers to fill his canvas until every inch is covered with numbers and he has achieved a kaleidoscopic effect that is both beautiful and highly meaningful.”

Godwin will be presented by Austin’s very own SAGE Studio & Gallery at the 30th anniversary of the Outsider Art Fair New York. See more of Godwin’s work @sagestudioatx

King had a SOLD OUT solo show with SAGE STUDIO @ Austin, TX!

King had the greatest family travel to Sage Studio. He stayed at a cozy AirBnB and visited the super cool studio Gallery and met with Katie and Lucy. They made all of our dream come true.

Here, how they introduced King:

King Nobuyoshi Godwin (b. 1991) lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina. When he paints, King—who has a form of synesthesia—uses a complex and meaningful system of colors and numbers to express his feelings, filling his canvas until every inch is covered with numbers. On his art, King says, "I have autism. I speak a little. I paint because it is my job and it feels good. I like to paint what I care about and what I love. I like to paint animals and leaves because they are my friends. They speak to me, they feel me, they are sweet. . . I paint sweet love. I believe that all of my loves to be together. That is a very good thing. I want to be a part of it too. I connect with them in my own way. I put colors and numbers to speak my mind. That is a wonderful thing." King’s recent solo show, The Artist Is Having A Good Day, sold out its first weekend.

King is joining the Online Exhibition of ArtSuite.com. It is to bridge the collectors and artists.

ARTISTS.
COLLECTORS.
COMMUNITY.

Artsuite is an online platform and art marketplace that’s all about creating connections — connecting artists with collectors, galleries with communities, advocates and activists with impactful causes and events. Most importantly, it’s about helping YOU connect with art that moves you and artists who will inspire you.

The most effective way to support working artists is to share their art and encourage the world to invest in their work. When Artsuite's founders came to that conclusion, they resolved to use their new platform to simplify the process of acquiring art and make the experience personalized and rewarding, for seasoned collectors and first-time buyers alike. After all, no one should miss out on the true and abiding joy of living with art.

By organizing virtual exhibitions and unexpected collaborations, activating non-traditional spaces, offering art advising services and sharing the stories of artists and collectors from around the world, the Artsuite team is exploring creative ways to make interacting with art feel accessible and exciting. The goal? To grow a diverse, inclusive and evolving community and to advocate for artists and arts organizations through these dynamic art offerings and future philanthropic projects.

Art Ritual (April 9- May 26, 2021) is a group exhibition featuring contemporary artwork that explores the ritual of art making. Selected artists include King Nobuyoshi Godwin, Rebecca Kaufman, Kelly Sheppard Murray, Ethel Revita, Evelyn Reyes, and Joy Tirade. Using their own forms and mediums, the artworks on view create an event of seeing.

Raleigh artist King Nobuyoshi Godwin paints numbers as Monet paints dots. While at first glance, the marks simply look like lines, the marks really are numbers. In using repeated numbers he creates texture, pattern, and a larger design.

King’s biggest works are on display. This is your chance to view them in person. Enjoy!

Visual Artist

Here is the article to share. What an amazing recognition!

If you ask King his greatest ambition in life? “I want to do a good job in painting,” he says. And “I want to be a good person.” As a leader in the arts community, King’s success is a triumph against all odds. Living with a disability, King was determined not to get stuck in a career selected for him—choosing to pursue art eight years ago. Since then, he has garnered commercial and critical success. “Making art and making money from art is hard for anyone,” says ArtAccess NC director Betsy Ludwig. “If you factor in the additional systemic barriers King faced, you can see why his talent and determination make him a leader in the arts community.” When he’s not painting or giving back via Artist Gala or VAE, you can find him enjoying his favorite music and flicks—and just generally being nice to people. Two things the world needs a lot more of: Art and kindness.

King Godwin with his painting, in progress at his Studio. Raleigh NC March, 2020

The highlight of the evening was the acquisition of a new work by King Nobuyoshi Godwin. Born and raised in Raleigh, Godwin was diagnosed with autism at a very young age, and grew up attending special education programs. Through the Beyond Academics program at UNC-Greensboro, he was able to explore the world of visual art. As his work developed, he began to incorporate his synesthesia – in which he associates colors with numbers and emotions – into his work, some of which are large scale (6 feet by 5 feet). The work chosen, entitled The cat is having a good day because it is with the seal and the raccoon and the leaf (55), uses the number 55 prominently in the work.

Selected work: “The cat is having a good day because it is with the seal and the raccoon and the leaf (55)”

Selected work: “The cat is having a good day because it is with the seal and the raccoon and the leaf (55)”

As a major example of work by this Raleigh artist, this painting allows the Gregg to continue to diversify its collection—something that we are even more committed to in a time when the Black Lives Matter movement is helping the whole nation answer a need to rebalance our appreciation of all the cultures that have gone into making this a great  country. King’s work is also a step toward recognizing the significance of art by people with disabilities. We think his work will be wonderful for teaching use in classes and exhibitions that deal with mathematics, perception, psychology, and a host of other possibilities, including sheer enjoyment.

King’s work can be seen on his website .https://www.kinggodwin.comThis essay by King’s brother Malik, a clockmaker and artist in his own right, provides a glimpse into King’s world, and how his paintings evolve.

Together - We are Having a Good Day Together features the mother and son duo, Yuko Taylor and King Godwin, whose bond infuences one another’s own personal expression within their bodies of work. Apart from being an artist, Yuko’s life work has been to support King, an adult with autism. King transfers his feelings and what is true to him onto canvas and three-dimensional objects using bright, vibrant colors along with numbers that hold a special signifcance. Yuko, a Japanese-American Nihonga and oil painter, has exhibited works globally and draws inspiration from modern Western art and Japanese historical imagery. While King expresses his day, Yuko relays timelessness through her depiction of nature. King teaches Yuko the true meaning of how art impacts human beings, and in return, Yuko motivates King to keep pursuing his art. While the Covid-19-quarantine world diminished the community that supported them, King helped Yuko realize the only thing of importance was how to live their day-to-day lives—through painting. Trough this revelation, they recognized there was no loss. Yuko writes: “We are thankful that we have art in our lives. We are together, and having a good day.”

Reimagine Your World, Through the Eyes of King.

IMG_2618.jpeg

We’re pleased to announce that King is now exhibiting his work at 5 Points Gallery. He is one of just 10 contemporary artists whose work is featured at this premier fine arts gallery in downtown Durham, North Carolina. He will be on hand at the gallery to celebrate the opening of his exhibition this Saturday, 8/29, from 5-8pm. (Masks required.)

Through his art, King expresses his endless love of life. He sees what is true to him, and speaks his feeling through his paintings – sharing images of a beautiful world painstakingly created out of individual numbers. Viewers of his art are invited into this world, welcomed by the vibrant colors and bold shapes. Close observation is rewarded with glimpses of the intricate patterns that are the basic building blocks of his painting and sculpture. By engaging with King’s work, we’re encouraged to look at our surroundings with new eyes, and bring his unique and refreshing perspective into our own lives.

As a person with autism, King is extremely sensitive to and in tune with the world around him. He speaks the language of shapes and colors and numbers, and expresses that in the titles of his work: “The Friends Are Doing Great Because They Are Together With The Goat, 7177;” “The Hat Is Feeling Silver Because It Is In A Good House, 9997.” The numbers dance on his canvas, and they’re his friends. When he paints, he smiles.

As a professional artist, King has been spending much of the pandemic in his home studio, the place where he feels most free. He is taking on commissions of all sizes, and is currently exploring very largest canvas painting. While many of his regular activities and normal routines have been upended, he is loving the challenges he’s facing and staying connected through video chats and social media. You can follow King, and see his latest work, on Facebook and Instagram.

He is especially pleased to be able to support himself through his art. His work can be viewed in the gallery Fridays and Saturdays from 5-8pm, or by appointment. Visit 5 Points Gallery and www.kinggodwin.com to find out how to see and purchase his work.

WELCOME “King” TO CHRISTOPHER PARK GALLERY

Yuko Taylor

The seeds of the gallery began while observing people as they contemplated entering a traditional gallery. Many people just did not look comfortable in what appeared to be unfamiliar territory. When the decision was made to open a gallery, we wanted to create an atmosphere where our visitors felt warm and welcomed. We chose to display art in an informal way, more like they way you live in your home. To that end, we used color on the walls, real furniture and lots of ambient lighting. After all, few people live in a home with stark walls, display podiums and spotlights.
